Candlelight Vigil in memory of Dr. Gaurav Gopalan

o West Chapel of the Memorial Chapel. All are invited to the Candlelight Vigil in memory of Dr. Gaurav Gopalan sponsored by the Office of LGBT Equity
o All are welcome to express their memories, sorrow, fears, hopes, or other emotions or thoughts at this remembrance.Dr. Guarav Gopalan was found dead September 10 at 5:20 AM in Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. On September 20, the DC Medical Examiner ruled Dr. Gopalan’s death a homicide. He was 35.Dr. Gopalan graduated from the University of Maryland with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering in 2004.

Ben Cohen at GU

o Back to School Tour with Ben Cohen: World Class Rugby player, Chairman, StandUp Foundation.
o Ben Cohen was a professional rugby player from 1996-2011 playing in both England and France. He is first among straight professional athletes to focus his philanthropic efforts for the benefit of the LGBT community.
o After retiring from rugby, Ben has committed his time and energy to the StandUp Foundation (www.standupfoundation.com) which is the world’s first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of homophobia and bullying in sports.
Lavender Country and Folk Dancers
o October 21-23, 2011
o Gender-Free Contra Dance Camp in Becket, MA. All dancing is gender free: no gender terms used in teaching and calling and people are free to dance either role. Experienced dancers and beginners are welcome. People of any gender identity and sexual orientation are welcome. http://lcfd.org/lcfd/
o Contra dance is like square dancing, but is done in long lines. It's a ton of fun; there are several regular (not gender-free) contra dances in the area. I'll be attending the Friday night dances at Glen Echo most regularly, if anyone is interested in checking it out. More on contra and the Friday Night Dance here: http://fridaynightdance.org/
National Coming Out Day Sign Up
o NCOD is an internationally observed (Oct. 11) civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about issues facing the LGBTQIA community. The MICA office, LGBT Equity and the ONE Project are collaborating on an event in the Stamp at which students can step up to the microphone and come out or briefly share their personal story about facing issues around coming out and transitioning.
